Benefits of Companionship for Our Seniors

Blog

Senior citizens often become lonely due to life events. Empty nesters, widows and those with mobility issues are the most affected by loneliness. Dr. Karen Roberto, a gerontologist at the University of Northern Colorado, reported that companionship and friendships help senior citizens maintain good mental health. Companionship benefits seniors in a variety of ways, such as the one’s listed below.

  • Purpose – Seniors that find themselves suddenly alone can feel like they lack purpose. They might have spent years caring for their spouse, children or other family members. Suddenly not having a purpose to get out of bed in the morning can have a negative effect on the mind. Companionship and friendship allow senior citizens to look forward to speaking to their friends, planning outings and focus on fun and entertainment. A true friend is also an excellent confidant that can help guide the senior through their grieving process or life changing event.
  • Lower Risk of Alzheimer’s and Dementia – Research has revealed that senior citizens who regularly spend time with others socially are at a lower risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s related conditions.
  • Improved Physical Health – Attending social events and activities on a regular basis boosts positive feelings and relieves stress among the elderly. The body remains healthier longer due to less exposure to stress.
  • The sense of Community – The sense of community allows individuals to feel like a part of a bigger family. Being part of a group makes people feel valued, needed and a sense of belonging.
  • Connection with Friends – Many elderly people will tell their story of outliving their spouse, family, and friends from the past. Losing so many people throughout their lifetime can make a person feel lonely, isolated and depressed. Joining a group and attending social activities allows senior citizens to continue to make new friends on a regular basis.

One very important source of companionship comes from owning a pet. Senior citizens that have a dog or cat will feel like they have a best friend that will always keep them company. Dogs especially seem to be the favorite choice. There are specific breeds such as the Shih Tzu that are known for being an excellent lap dog and companion.

If you know a senior citizen that is isolated and lonely try to become their friend by sharing a common interest. Sometimes the love of cooking, watching movies or reading books can create a valuable friendship.
